I am really really close to committing to this trip. Have to train for it though.. gotta be able to carry 35 lbs over 13 miles.

Also found the outfitter REI is using, we can create our own customized trip that's not as strenous, for beginner backpackers, be cheaper, as in just 2 nights and 3 days. If we also stay the night before and the night after the trip, just camping in the state park, that will be a 4 night and 5 days trip.

Otherwise if I can't get enough people then they have a women's trip that I'll do:

So chime in if you're interested! I'm looking at sometime between the last weekend of Sept to Early Nov.

I’ve been wanting to hike the entire Appalachian Trail… too bad I can’t join you this soon. Between a crazy schedule before I leave the country and how awful my feet feel, I just can’t do it this year. Oh well… looks cool though.

Re: duuuuude
i do know you, i saw you at the duel between you and midair.

are you serious about this? i can try to get a custom trip for a few folks, and maybe get the price cut (using same outfitter as REI) by doing 2 nights/3 days. But, we can get to the state park the day before, and leave the day after the trip, so it's more like a 4 nights/5 day trip.

Sounds like fun
Sounds like fun. I haven't been backpacking these last few years, which is a pity 'cos I really do love it.

Is this a tent-trip ? Or do you sleep-over in some kinda shelter/cabin ?

If you're not used to backpacking and don't know the basics, it is sensible to go on a guided trip. Once you have some more experience though, there's no reason you need a guide, which adds a lot to freedom and subtracts from price.

The Norwegian trekking association arranges a lot of trips like these, http://www.turistforeningen.no/english/ and also operate a lot of cabins/shelters that every member gets a key to. You still pay a bit for use of the cabins (including cooking-fuel, firewood etc), aproximaly $25/day, and you'll need food in addition to that. But it's still a very cheap and very nice way to go backpacking.

For a week of backpacking, (7 nights, 8 days) I ususally spend aproximately $400. Half of that for the lodging, the other half for food and various.

The nice thing about going guide-less is to be able to wake up in the morning, feel the condition of your legs, have a glance at the wonderful weather, and go "nah, today I'll just make a 2 mile stroll to that nice sea back there and have a swim. Thereafter I'll spend the rest of the day reading a book in the shade."

Time is the ultimate luxury. Preferably time during which you *have-to* do absolutely nothing.

It's a tough decision, that's for sure. I mean, our number 2 is already 20 months old, and much as I love him, half the time I'm not even sure we made the right choice in having him.

Yes it's pretty horrible. I try not to think about it. But just have to hope that people turnout for the mid terms, and then we oust him in 4 years.
