book trance

When I watch "Stardust".. I was pretty sure I had read the book, but I couldn't remember a single thing about it. So the movie was all new to me, and I loved watching it.

I doubted myself.. maybe it was another Gaiman book? But nope, I saw the book sitting on my bookshelf. Since I kept that book it must've been enjoyable. I read a lot, and since I've limited space, I tend to sell or give mediocre books away.

How could I have read a book in the last few years and not remember it at all??

So when I saw trailers for "The Golden Compass", I'm pretty sure I've read that too. I remember having the second book, and then selling/giving them away since I couldn't be bothered to complete the trilogy. But.. again, I don't remember what it was about. The movie trailer did not jog my memory at all. All I know is I read that while living in Tarrytown, which meant within the last 2 years or so.

Today at lunch hour, I was at Barnes and Noble, and I picked up the Golden Compass and started reading it. Nada. No jog of memory. So far, what little I read does not seem familiar. I went ahead and bought the book. Again.

This made me wonder.. what happens when I read? Maybe I go into a book trance.. and what I read goes into memory that I rarely access in mundane life, or maybe I don't even retain it.

It's all very odd. It doesn't happen seem to happen often. I've memories of books I read when I was younger.

Strange.

I also have read plenty of books and later could not remember anything of what happened. Sometimes it just happens. It could have been something about the book, it just bounced off of you, or even just your frame of mind when you read it.
