heartburn poll

--- If you've ever had heartburn in your life, how did you treat it?

I've been having heartburn for a while, it goes up and down. the past few days have been bad..
i've tried prilosec before, it worked for some time but then it made me really sick. i don't really like being on drugs.

i guess the only other option is to change my diet. but i'm having a really really hard time sticking to a bland, salad rich diet. sigh. but today's a new day, I'll go to central market and grab more greens. maybe more cheese.. or something to trick me to eat it.

*feeling sorry for myself*

update: so i went to central market, got myself fresh celery and cumcumber juice.. and spent lots of money buying salads, dressing, things to trick me to eat salad like proscuitto, pancetta, blue cheese, brie, piave.. and other proteins (ox-tail).. I love meat. So hopefully I can get on a low-carb, high fiber, protein diet.

I guess I've to trick myself into eating fruits and cheese for dessert, like the french. instead of my fav chocolates.

Hi Nadine, coming from a family that has suffered from reflux disease for ages, I can tell you pretty much that first off, you should go to the doctor and get it checked out. It's hard to tell the severity just from symptoms and it could be a symptom itself of somethig more serious.
Second, assuming it's not serious, you have 2 options, meds or diet. (In my family, we need both) As far as meds go, it's a see what works best for you situation. Prilosec and aciphex did nothing for me. My parents swear by zantac 150, I'm on daily prevacid which has been great, with a TUMS booster when I eat really bad.
As far as diet, be aware that if you're gonna go this route, you're going to lose a lot of yummy stuff. Here are some of the more common things that make heartburn happen/worse.
Fats including oils and cheese, chocolate, mint, garlic, red meat, and highly acidic foods (OJ, vinegar, tomatoes, lemon etc) basically your traditional italian meal. I thinkwine's on the list too, I forget.
Personally, I'm fine with taking a daily pill for the rest of my life to be able to eat what I like. Your views may differ :-)
Hope this helps.

thanks for your feedback!

hopefully if i go the diet route, my body will heal itself enough to be able to handle chocolate again.

My karate teacher had really bad heartburn and none of the meds seemed to do any good. She went with the change the diet approach, and apparently that worked wonders for her. However, once she was better, I THINK (not 100% positive) that she could eat some of the "bad" foods in moderation.
