Backpacking at Hill Country State Natural Area Feb 23-24

Next weekend I'm organizing a backpacking trip. Let me know if you wanna come!

Are you guys itching to go outdoors and sleep under the stars?? Cos I am!

I'm co-leading a backpacking trip in the Austin TOWN (Texas Outdoors Women Network) group. This trip is open to men, women and older children.

We will meet at 10 am (location TBD, anyone know of a good carpool place to meet where we can park cars overnight? Otherwise we may have to individually arrange carpools)

We will hike in 2 miles, set up camp for Saturday night, and hike out 3-5 miles on Sunday.

Natural Features: The Hill Country State Natural Area is a scenic mosaic of rocky hills, flowing springs, oak groves, grasslands, and canyons. The terrain ranges from flat, broad creek bottoms to steep, rocky canyons up to 2000 feet in elevation. The West Verde Creek has several spring-fed streams, and tanks in the park provide several swimming holes with limited fishing for catfish, perch, and large-mouth bass.

Spring water is available for horses, but people should bring their own drinking water. There are 40 miles of multi-use trails to explore (hiking, equestrian, and mountain biking allowed).

Special Notes:

* Be sure to bring drinking water; Potable water is not available; All water must be treated.
* Camp fires permitted in fire rings only, except during burn bans.
* As with all Texas State Parks, pets must be on leashes no longer than 6 feet (strictly enforced).
* Trails may be subject to closure during wet conditions.
* We are a primitive park, back to nature - so we say "If you think you need it, we don't have it, so you'll need to bring it!"

Backpack (Primitive, designated) Camping Areas have fire rings and are located 1.5 to 3.5 miles from the trail head parking - Butterfly Springs (capacity 8), Wilderness Camp (capacity 40), and Hermit's Shack (capacity 40). These sites are non-reservable and are all first-come, first-served.

$8 per 4 people

Entrance Fees:
# $6 per day, per person 13 and older, for day use.
# $3 per day, per person 13 and older, for overnight use.

friendship and weddings!

goodness. i just got asked to be a bridesmaid :) how exciting! and i'm sure the wedding is going to be unconventionally interesting :)

so there's 3 weddings i've to go to this year so far... and two of them are from my college's dinnercrew crowd.. and the third also involves a cornellian. i guess 2008 is a good year for cornellians :)

one of the wedding occurs in the weekend of my musical theatre show, the show date hasn't been finalized yet, but hopefully it won't conflict.

in march i will fly to NYC to watch broadway shows with my best friend from ithaca.

in april i i will fly to Ithaca to attend the wedding of gilbert and kate at the Cornell chapel. andy is being dragged to this.. :-) hopefully there'll magically be space for him to attend the reception. it's his first time in ithaca.

in may, my improv friends have a wedding that looks pretty friendly and sweet.

in july, i get to be a bridesmaid.

it just occured to me that i have lots of friends.
