The Gym

A few months ago, I canceled my super expensive gym with private locker, laundry service, green trails and heated pool. It made me sad to do that, but it was far from both home and work, and I went like once a month, or much less frequent. So it was a waste of money. I still have my gym membership near work ($79 a year!) which I can visit during lunch. But near my home, I wanted to have workout options. There's a small no-frills gym 2 blocks from me. Andy joined it, but then never went. So maybe distance isn't a factor either. Instead, I decided to join the UT (university of texas) gym. It's nearby, no contract, and has great facilities. And the biggest advantage? A lot of my friends go there. So I'm hoping the peer support will help. Yesterday I worked out for 1 hour 40 mins, probably the longest ever, because I went with a friend. We kept chatting and chatting and finally she was like: "Are we skinny yet? Can we go?"

The parking sucks at UT. So that's the biggest obstacle.

why don't you walk or bike to the ut gym? you know, since you're exercising anyway...

It takes me 20 mins to walk to the gym, and then I might as well turn around to walk 20 mins back home.
I'd rather walk at town lake or the gym where I can blast my iPod and not worry about cars.

the bus is slow, and a hassle, and not going-to-gym inducing.
it's also 75cents, which is the cost of metered parking outside of gregory. i managed to get a tix today using that metered parking cos it has a ridiculous limit of 45 mins. But it was good for me to learn that i can't do cardio, swim and shower under 45 mins.

there's also a parking garage nearby which is $3 for 1 hour, and $6 for 2 hours.

and also parking at dean keaton which i think is $1 per hour, and free after 5:30 pm. so that's a good option and only about 3-4 block walk.

i'm just not keen on working out... and then going out and working out.

and in the end it's what works for me that matters. there's plenty of people who can just put on running shoes and exercise, or workout in front of the tv. right now, i prefer the treadmill and swimming.

Good luck !! You must still be dancing though, isn't that exercise too? Or are you aiming for super fit?

Where I live there are courses of aerobics two days a week for 23 euros a month (that's nothing)... Should I consider myself lucky?

I never really liked working out at Gregory besides hanging out by the pool, but I'd go for yoga classes and some light cardio at the Rec Center which is closer to Dean Keeton. There's almost always parking there except during gametimes.

Classes are extra though, aren't they?

Reading your posts about working out provided enough motivation to clear my calendar and schedule in some classes next week. :)

yeah the thing with this fitness stuff is consistency. it's so easy to be excited for a week and then slack off.
watching the biggest loser has been great motivation tho.
