pictures and dancing

I just refused a wedding for April 30, because I've my musical theatre shows that weekend. I did consider dumping the show for a second, but I decided if I did, it needed to be for a different wedding. It was a phonecall from a mom, who's daughter disliked her engagement session and wanted to dump their current photographer. This is generally a #redflag client. Apparently the shoot was too traditional, and she wanted photo-journalistic.

First, why is the mom calling? Second, why did you hire someone who's style was different from what you want?

Anyways, dance class yesterday was hard but fun. On one hand, I hate being torn away from the computer, but on the other hand, I need to be torn away. They haven't casted yet, so it would be easy to just slip out of the show since there's so many people anyways.

Here's one shot from the trash the dress session. There was a lot of really good shots and I had a hard time culling. But I also had a hard time editting, since I'm still struggling to find a style.

I love that shot!

Having a style is important, but I wouldn't worry about it so much. If you make choices that you think are aesthetically pleasing, I think that your own style with emerge without you even realizing it.

You think so? I feel like with colors, I sometimes go vintagy (like the one above is cross-process style with Alien Skin Exposure)

And sometimes I barely want to touch the picture.

uhm... You're not a photo-journalistic style either. You're way more artistic with the way you let light and color play in your images.

#redflag client for realz.

Hahah, funny you say that. I actually do consider myself photo-journalistic for weddings (not portraits when they're aware of you, but in a wedding, I don't really interfere much. I'm a Ninja!) The only exception is the family portraits, and I make them mark on the contract that they want that.

BUT, I do like toning and processing my photographs, which some pure photojournalists frown on.

I think that's fine. I know that my wedding photographer processed some of her favourite photos more heavily than the rest, and I didn't mind. I think that the processing is a way of emphasizing certain images. But, then again, I'm not shooting weddings. I'm not sure if there's a standard in the industry regarding stuff like that.

GORGEOUS! I enjoy the soft pink hue to the entire photo, as if a glaze in an oil painting. It's warm and delicious, and the composition is refreshing with its solid movement. Good stuff.
